THE PROFESSIONAL REGISTER OF HOSPITAL PLAY SPECIALISTS.

The prime purpose of a professional register is the protection of the public.

Though not a statutory regulatory body, Hospital Play Staff Education Trust (HPSET), through its register seeks to promote the quality and professional status of the practising hospital play specialist.

The Register for Hospital Play Specialists was opened in 1988 and those successfully completing the qualifying course are eligible for registration with HPSET.

Registrants are given a unique registration number as well as a certificate and badge.

In 1998, HPSET ratified a policy on re-registration for Hospital Play Specialists (HPS).

Introduced in 2000, re-registration has provided the qualified Hospital Play Specialist with the opportunity to demonstrate evidence of continued professional development based on updating their knowledge and skills.

Hospital Play Specialists registered with HPSET have been invited to re-register every five years by completing a form that they wish to remain on the register and that they have, during the previous five year period, met the agreed criteria for re-registration.

January 2011 saw the introduction of the revised registration and re-registration policy and procedure based on meeting HPSET ‘Standards of CPD’. Registrants, in line with professions regulated by the HPC, are now required to re-register every two years from their current expiry date. Specific re-instatement and return to practice requirements have been introduced for registrants who allow their registration to lapse.

The Registration Committee has responsibility for maintaining the standards for re-registration. Each year a percentage of those applying for re-registration will be required to complete a profile for audit.

Periodic re-registration is a valuable tool for maintaining the confidence of the public and other healthcare workers in the profession as a whole.
Registrants who fail to apply for re-registration or complete all required documentation by the due date will have their registration lapsed.
