MEETING THE CRITERIA FOR RE-REGISTRATION
Guidance Notes

In order to re-register all HPS are required to have completed a minimum of 400 hours of practice during each 5 year period.

This number of hours is based upon HPS working, on average, a 30 hour week and may be expressed as follows:

Registration Period Requirement in Hours
Average Annual Requirement 80
5 years 400

From the above it can be seen that a HPS may not be in employment for a period of two, three or four years but, could then complete 400 hours practice within one year and renew registration with HPSET, provided that they also meet the following criteria:

To have undertaken at least five days or 30 hours of learning activity relevant to their practice during each five year period

It should be stressed that five days or 30 hours of learning activity is the minimum period of recommended study. These hours must not include mandatory courses. The five days of study may be taken as either whole or part-time equivalent days.

It is important that any study undertaken is relevant to the HPS current post and individual career and the HPS should set learning objectives before attending each course.

It is intended that continuing education should lead to the acquisition of knowledge, maintenance and development of skills and improved practice in the workplace.

A variety of categories of study subjects exist for the continuing education of the HPS, and include:-

Hospital Play * Clinical Topics * Child Protection * Management/Information Technology (IT) Skills * Psychology/Counseling * Complementary Therapy * Teaching Skills. * Participating in Research or Audit * Carrying out a Literature Search * Attending a Conference or Professional Meeting etc.

In order to demonstrate that they have made every effort to maintain and develop their knowledge and skills, each HPS is required to keep a Professional Development Portfolio.

Portfolios are necessary for the individual to keep track of his/her development in the work place. They also enable the hospital play specialist to select material for a variety of purposes, including performance reviews and job applications as well as evidence for audit by HPSET.

Re-registrants are required to sign a declaration of acceptance of the Hospital Play Specialists Code of Professional Conduct demonstrating their intention to uphold the integrity of the Profession.

A copy of the Code of Professional Conduct should be retained in your portfolio.

All documentation must be completed, signed and returned with the correct fee by the specified dates within the 5 year registration period, failure to do so will result in registration being lapsed.
