RE-REGISTRATION FOR HOSPITAL PLAY SPECIALISTS
In 1998 the Hospital Play Staff Education Trust (HPSET) ratified a policy on re-registration for Hospital Play Specialists (HPS). Introduced in 2000, re-registration has provided the qualified hospital play specialist with the opportunity to demonstrate evidence of continued professional development based on updating their knowledge and skills. Periodic re-registration is a valuable tool for maintaining the confidence of the public and other healthcare workers in the profession as a whole.
The five yearly periodical programme of re-registration was based on the ‘PREP’ requirements operational within the nursing profession and was devised in accordance with the NHS Clinical Governance agenda.
To reflect the scope of professional development opportunities available and to take account of changing needs of society (social, educational and economic) and the range of provision of child healthcare services the re-registration programme has been fully revised and updated in line with that used by the Health Professions Council.
With effect from January 2011 all Hospital Play Specialists registered with HPSET are invited to re-register every two years from the date of initial registration or expiry date of current period of registration.
Criteria for Re-Registration
- They have continued to practice their profession or have undertaken a period of updating in order to return to practice.
- They continue to meet HPSET’s standards for continuing professional development (CPD).
- They re-affirm their acceptance of the code of professional conduct by signing the declaration.
- They confirm their health and character are sufficiently good to enable them to practice safely.
- They pay the re-registration fee.
- They participate in the audit programme if randomly selected.
Though giving registrants the responsibility of determining whether or not they have been practising their profession and the flexibility to plan their CPD to take account of their changing needs the new process is stringent and demanding. It gives explicit and very clear guidelines as to what constitutes CPD and how it should be recorded, analysed and related to practice.
Specific updating requirements have been set for those wishing to return to practice. All HPS who have allowed their registration to lapse will be automatically required to complete an audit CPD profile.
Application forms for re-registration are generated in accordance with the details held on the HPSET database of qualified Hospital Play Specialists.
Failure to return documentation by the date specified on the form will automatically lead to registration being deemed lapsed.
