RE-REGISTRATION FOR HOSPITAL PLAY SPECIALISTS

In 1998 the Hospital Play Staff Education Trust (HPSET) ratified a policy on re- registration for Hospital Play Specialists (HPS). Introduced in 2000, re-registration has provided the qualified hospital play specialist with the opportunity to demonstrate evidence of continued professional development based on updating their knowledge and skills. Periodic re-registration is a valuable tool for maintaining the confidence of the public and other healthcare workers in the profession as a whole.

The planned programme of periodic re-registration, based on the current 'PREP' requirements operational within the nursing profession, was devised in accordance with the NHS Clinical Governance agenda.

At present all Hospital Play Specialists registered with HPSET are invited to re-register every five years by completing a form that they wish to remain on the register and that they have, during the previous five year period, met the agreed criteria for re-registration.

Criteria for Re-Registration

  • In order to re-register all HPS are required to have completed a minimum of 400 hours of practice.
  • To have undertaken at least five days or 30 hours of learning activity relevant to their practice during each five year period
  • In order to demonstrate that they have made every effort to maintain and develop their knowledge and skills, each HPS is required to keep a Professional Development Portfolio
  • Re-registrants are also required to sign a declaration of acceptance of the Hospital Play Specialists Code of Professional Conduct demonstrating their intention to uphold the integrity of the Profession. (This has been requirement for all new registrants since 2005).

Audit

The Registration Committee has responsibility for maintaining the standards for re- registration. Each year 10% of those applying for re-registration will be required to complete a profile for audit.
